Department of Information Systems in the Faculty of Computing and Informatics is one of the newly approved and established departments in the Institution. The department took off in the Harmattan Semester of the 2019/2020 academic session.

Aim and Objectives

The IS programme aims to produce graduates who can integrate information technology solutions and business processes to meet the information needs of businesses and other enterprises, enabling them to achieve their objectives effectively and efficiently. This discipline’s perspective on information technology emphasizes information, and views Technology as an instrument for generating, processing, and distributing information.

The objectives of the programme are to:

  1. provide students with a broad and balanced foundation of Information Technology knowledge and practical skills;
  2. develop in students a range of transferrable and applicable skills of information technology to business organizations and other aspects of human endeavour;
  3. develop students for the purpose of self-employment and job placements in the government and industry;
  4. generate in students an appreciation of the importance of information systems in an industrial, economic, technological and social context;
  5. develop students through a sound foundation in information technology as a basis for further studies in information systems or multi-disciplinary studies involving information systems;
  6. prepare students for professional careers in Information Systems;
  7. develop students with strong analytical and critical thinking skills to thrive within the complex competitive global environment;
  8. develop students with strong ethical principles and interpersonal communication skills;
  9. develop students with strong skills in teamwork and project management;
  10. Introduce students to current trends in computing

Vision

The envisioned interest is to produce the best crops of graduates who would not just be able to provide information systems solutions to a variety of class of problems but who would also be self-employable and also be able to adapt to the exponential trend in the information and communication world of today.

Philosophy

The Information Systems (IS) programme seeks to provide students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in both the IT (Information Technology) and the management fields so that graduates are adequately equipped to contribute to the development and exploitation of information systems and technology in organizations and society as a whole.
